Research

My research spans the sub-fields of film production, computer graphics, and cultural preservation and contributes to an understanding of the hidden labor histories embedded in digital material culture.

My current project investigates the use of computer graphics at JPL/NASA from the mid-1970s to the 1980s, as artists and computer scientists sought to visualize spacecraft and travel to other worlds. Their stories can enrich our understanding of how space exploration has evolved.

A second project explores museums using digital 3D scanning and reality capture techniques. The 3D model is a powerfully evocative visual representation that creates new ways to experience the artifact, but little is known about how these new pathways will be received by scientists, researchers, and the public. My research will help form a broad picture of how physical and digital objects are beginning to coexist in the curatorial domain, and how the entry of digital 3D artifacts may transform the archive.
